Johann Wolfgang Baumgartner

Kufstein 1709 - Augsburg 1761


On March 28, 1712, Johann Wolfgang Baumgartner was born in Kufstein. In Salzburg, Baumgartner was trained in the technique of behind glass painting (or reverse glass painting). After completing his training, Baumgartner worked in Bohemia, Hungary, and Italy. He went to Augsburg in 1733, where he received citizenship. This accorded him the right to practice oil painting.
His works include landscapes and architecture paintings and over 300 engravings and frescoes. The ceiling painting in the church "Wallfahrtskirche Heilig-Kreuz" in the former monastery in Bergen is Baumgartner's largest and most important work.
Johann Wolfgang Baumgartner died on September 7, 1761 in Augsburg, Bavaria.
